Every year, MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships and Fine Arts 3D department work with Haley House, a food justice nonprofit, to hold a charity event called the Souper Bowl.
In my junior year at MassArt, I was employed by the Center for Art and Community Partnerships as their Motion Media Artist. In practice, this meant creating small animations and video clips for their social media channels on a week to week basis, and in the background plugging away at this project.
The Clay for Change bowl making event took place in November, and the bowls were finished for the Souper Bowl night in February. The video was released at the end of that month. All together, I had about three months for this piece.
I was in a very fortunate situation here because I was working with one of my interview subjects as a client. I was able to cut temporary versions of the interviews to see how well we were telling the story, and use an additional interview to fill in the gaps. In many other situations, one might have to rely on text or narration, and I feel this piece is much stronger for having avoided it.
